Transforming the Global Response to Serious Traumatic Brain Injury: A Path to Recognition by the World Health Organization

Abstract(s)

This session will unveil the transformative global initiative to secure a World Health Assembly (WHA) resolution for adoption by the World Health Organization that designates Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a chronic and notifiable condition, paving the way for unprecedented improvements in prevention, care, and recovery. Presented by Michelle McDonald, CEO of Brain Injury Canada, and Dr. John Corrigan, professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Ohio State University and Director of the Ohio Valley Center for Brain Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation, the discussion will highlight the Coalition’s groundbreaking efforts to address the profound human and economic impact of TBI. The presentation will explore the resolution’s potential to reshape global health priorities, emphasizing the urgent need for equitable strategies that integrate long-term rehabilitation and care, especially for communities in low- and middle-income countries disproportionately affected by TBI. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the power of global collaboration, innovative solutions, and compelling advocacy to elevate TBI as a critical public health issue with the World Health Organization.
