Biography

Martje Huijben from the Netherlands is an occupational therapist since 2006 and has been a certified cognitive rehabilitation therapist (CPCRT) since 2009. She works as an occupational therapist in a general hospital where she works in acute care (neurology) and in rehabilitation. She mainly treats patients with cognitive problems.
Since 2015 she is on the international board of the iSCR International Society of Cognitive Rehabilitation, in the position of Credentialing Chair. She is also on the Dutch board of the iSCR.
In the Netherlands, she is active in various working groups that deal with the care of patients with brain injury and is the guest lecturer at various courses.

Nada Botros is a third year medical student at the Medical College of Wisconsin, interested in exploring applications of neuroplasticity in the rehabilitation of patients with motor and language deficits. She graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL with a bachelor's in Neuroscience in the Biology Allied Field in 2020 and earned her master's in Medical Sciences at Loyola University Chicago in 2021. She is a current member of the Krucoff Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Biography

Dr. Ahmed Alnemari, MD, MPH, FRCSC, is a Skull Base Fellow at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his Neurosurgery Residency at the University of Ottawa, where he served as Chief Resident, and is now a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). Dr. Alnemari also holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Toledo and graduated with honors from Taif University, Saudi Arabia.

He has extensive research experience in neurosurgery and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented at leading conferences, including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Dr. Alnemari has a special interest in treating traumatic brain injury. His clinical expertise also includes skull base surgery. He is fluent in English and Arabic and is actively involved in academic and community initiatives.

Biography

Dr. Hyzak is an Assistant Professor-Provosts' Fellow and Implementation Scientist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Her work is focused on closing the research-to-practice pipeline gap for individuals living with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in rehabilitation and community-based treatment settings. Using implementation science theories, mixed methodologies and community-based co-design approaches, her research seeks to develop and test equitable implementation interventions (i.e., implementation strategies) aimed to accelerate the adoption, reach, implementation, scalability and sustained use of evidence-based clinical interventions in real world practice settings. Dr. Hyzak is co-chair of the U.S. Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems Implementation Science Special Interest Group (SIG), and a board member and sponsorship chair of the Society for Implementation Research Collaboration. Dr. Hyzak enjoys team-science approaches to answering system-level questions to improve the quality and effectiveness of health care for individuals living with TBI. Her research is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Eric Ingram

Biography

Eric Ingram received his bachelor’s degree in psychology (with a focus in neuroscience) from Brown University, where he ran varsity track and field. Currently, he is a 4th year doctoral student in clinical psychology, with a concentration in neuropsychology, at the University of Kentucky. As a student in the neuropsychology concentration, he receives extensive training in neuroanatomy, cognitive functioning, neurocognitive assessment, and neurological health. Eric receives instruction and mentorship from Dr. Justin Karr, an expert in mild traumatic brain injuries and concussions. In his graduate career thus far, Eric has been funded by the Lyman T. Johnson Diversity Fellowship and the UNITE Predoctoral Research Fellowship, both awarded through the University of Kentucky to support diverse scholars and health-equity research. Because of this support Eric has produced 8 peer-reviewed manuscripts (3 first-authored) and 19 conference poster presentations to date. His research program focuses on elucidating the consequences of sport-related concussions and applying psychometric approaches to the interpretation of neuropsychological assessment data. His professional interests and ultimate career goals include becoming a Clinician-scientist at an academic medical center, with a focus in sports neuropsychology. Specifically, he hopes to conduct research which enables clinicians to match concussed student-athletes to personalized interventions using a profile approach to symptom presentations and injury management.

Biography

Dr. Irani practices in the Sports Medicine program and serves as director of the pediatric sports medicine fellowship program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

She is one of the Co-Leads of the Comprehensive Concussion Clinic in collaboration with Danielle Ransom, Psy.D., from Neuropsychology. This multidisciplinary clinic provides specialty care to children and adolescents with prolonged recovery from concussion.

After graduating from Florida State University College of Medicine, Dr. Irani completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Florida followed by a pediatric and adult sports medicine fellowship at All Children’s Hospital and Bayfront Medical Center. During her fellowship, she served as part of the physician team providing coverage for athletic teams at the University of South Florida and Eckerd College as well as youth and NCAA events.

She is involved in a research study through the Johns Hopkins All Children's Institute for Brain Protection Sciences that follows a group of youth athletes to learn more about the effects of sports-related concussions on a child’s neuropsychiatric, neuropsychological, and cognitive functioning.

Biography

Sofia completed her Bachelor's in Athletic Therapy at Concordia University and is a Certified Athletic Therapist. As a former athlete and working with athletes as an Athletic Therapist, she has always had an interest in concussion research. Sofia is passionate about optimizing care after concussion and getting individuals with concussion back to their normal lives. It is for this reason that she pursued a Master's degree in Health and Exercise Science at Concordia University. Her thesis focused on determining if electroencephalography can be used as a prognostic tool in adolescents with concussion in order to prioritize intervention and treatment services to those at risk of developing persistent symptoms. She is now completing her PhD at Concordia University focusing on identifying the optimal neuroimaging approach for pediatric concussion.

Dr. Ivanhoe is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation & Brain Injury Medicine, a senior fellow in the American Leadership Forum & currently, director of the SPASM program at TIRR Memorial Hermann. She is a professor at the McGovern Medical School-University of Texas and has served as spasticity faculty across the US & abroad. She has expertise in the treatment of spasticity, it’s impact on medical complications and as an advocate for healthcare access. Her clinical experience spans the spectrum of brain injury from neurosurgical ICUs to long term community follow up, including developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, stroke, etc. Dr. Ivanhoe has extensive experience in interventions for spasticity. She is published in articles and textbooks and is on the board of directors of the International Neurotoxin Association and is/has been speakers’ bureaus and/or advisory boards of companies involved in the treatment of spasticity and dystonia, & other aspects of the UMN syndrome. She has received awards from the Brain Injury Association of Texas, American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, the Distinguished Clinician award by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Humanitarian Award and Professional Contribution and Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Brain Injury Alliance of Texas, Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award at UT Houston, the Sheldon Berrol Clinical Service Award of the Brain Injury Association of America & the UTHealth McGovern Distinguished Faculty Clinical Science Award. She is recognized by US News and World Report and Best Doctors.

He is the Director of the Concussion Research Program for the Schoen Adams Research Institute at Spaulding Rehabilitation. He is the Director of the Mass General for Children Sports Concussion Program. He is a leading proponent of a biopsychosocial model for conceptualizing both good and poor outcome from mild traumatic brain injury in athletes, civilians, active-duty military service members, and veterans. Biography

Simra Javaid, DO, provides comprehensive care for pediatric patients with physical disabilities, cerebral palsy, spasticity, dystonia, acquired brain injury, neuromuscular disorders, and myelomeningocele. She is passionate about ensuring that all pediatric patients have access to equitable care and emphasizes personalized care based on the needs of the patient and their families. She is affiliated with TIRR Memorial Hermann and Children’s Memorial Hermann.

Dr. Javaid is also a clinical assistant professor of pediatric rehabilitation medicine at UTHealth Houston. After earning her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin, she completed her medical degree at Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine in Henderson, Nevada. After completing her physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan in Detroit, she received additional fellowship training for pediatric rehabilitation medicine at Children’s Health Dallas through the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Javaid is an author of multiple articles published in the Journal of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine and currently has chapters on pediatric brain injury and pediatric spinal cord injury pending publication. She also maintains active memberships with the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Association of Academic Physiatrists, American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, International Brain Injury Association, and International Paediatric Brain Injury Society.

When not seeing patients, Dr. Javaid enjoys traveling, trying out new foods, music, cooking, reading, and spending time with her family and friends.

Carley Jewell is a second-year PhD student in the Department of Kinesiology at Brock University, within the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, located in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. She earned her Master of Science degree from the University of Lethbridge in 2021. As a former varsity student-athlete, Carley's research interests are driven by her firsthand experiences and focus on the implementation and mobilization of psychosocial interventions for concussion prevention across the spectrum of care, concussion rates, management strategies, and support systems for athletes and referees. She is also interested in return-to-sport protocols following concussions. Anine Johansen is a dedicated healthcare professional and project leader with a background in nursing, having graduated from Lovisenberg Diaconal University College in Oslo. At the young age of 23, she experienced a life-altering stroke, which led her through an extended period of rehabilitation. Her personal journey through recovery has deeply shaped her professional path.
Today, Anine works as a project manager at The Sunnaas Foundation, where she plays a pivotal role in advancing the organization's mission. She is a certified peer mentor, utilizing her unique experience to support others in similar situations. In addition to her nursing degree, Anine has pursued further education in project management, equipping her with the skills to lead and innovate within her field.
She currently heads the Mentor Yng peer-to-peer educational programs at The Sunnaas Foundation, focusing on empowering young people through mentorship and guidance. Her leadership and commitment to peer support make her a valuable asset to both the foundation and the individuals she mentors.

Biography

Sarah Jones earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy at Columbia University in 2013. She completed a pediatric residency program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and later joined the inpatient rehabilitation team as a staff physical therapist. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Pediatric Physical Therapy. She is currently the inpatient rehabilitation supervisor and the lead physical therapist for the Disorders of Consciousness program. Her clinical interests include disorders of consciousness, severe brain injury, and stroke rehabilitation in pediatrics. She has spoken on the topic of Pediatric Disorders of Consciousness in the Combined Sections Meeting of the APTA and internationally at the International Conference on Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury.

Biography

Shannon Juengst, PhD, CRC, is Senior Scientist and a Clinical Investigator in the Brain Injury Research Center at TIRR Memorial Hermann and an Adjunct Associate Professor of PM&R at UT Health Sciences Center. Dr. Juengst’s career objectives are to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities related to traumatic brain injury through development and implementation of effective methods for monitoring emotional and behavioral problems and evidence-based behavioral health interventions to equip and empower persons with TBI and their care partners to independently manage behavioral, cognitive, and emotional problems across the continuum of their lives. Her work has a strong focus on improving meaningful participation. She has published over 110 peer reviewed articles, has been the Principal Investigator of multiple funded grants, and has consistently presented at scientific and professional conferences over the last 15 years, including ACRM. Dr. Juengst has been part of ACRM for over a decade, serving as the BI-ISIG Early Career Officer for four years and currently as Chair Elect, chairing two task forces in the Measurement ISIG, participating on multiple other committees, and presenting consistently every year at the annual meeting. In recognition of her work and service to ACRM, she was awarded the Deborah L. Wilkerson Early Career Award in 2020 and the Joshua B. Cantor Scholar Award in 2021 and named an elite reviewer by Archives of PM&R on multiple occasions. She was also awarded the IBIA Young Investigator Award in 2023.

Biography

Dr. Justin E. Karr is an Assistant Professor and the Clinical Neuropsychology Concentration Coordinator in the Department of Psychology at the University of Kentucky. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a Neuropsychology specialization at the University of Victoria in 2018, where his doctoral studies and research were supported by the Vanier Scholarship through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. He completed his clinical internship at the Seattle VA hospital and his postdoctoral fellowship within the Harvard Medical School system at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Karr has published over 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and authored over 125 presentations at regional, national, and international conferences. His research has focused on neuropsychological assessment methods, cross-cultural validation of psychological tests, cognitive aging, and the psychological and cognitive sequelae of brain injury in diverse populations, including survivors of intimate partner violence. His research has been financially supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Academy of Neuropsychology.

Louise C. Keegan, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS, ASHA Fellow, serves as the Associate Dean of Rehabilitation Sciences at Moravian University, and is an Associate Professor of Speech-Language Pathology. Her research examines optimal interventions for individuals with communication difficulties after brain injury. Her work related to supporting social communication with a primary focus on group interaction in functional contexts, and linguistic analysis as a lens to document communication strengths. In addition to clinical research, Dr. Keegan also conducts research in the scholarship of teaching and learning as related to the areas of clinical education, experiential learning and problem-based learning. She has numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented her work at many national and international conferences.

Biography

Erica Engelsman Rawls, LCSW, M.Ed., CBIS, is the Day Program Director at Hinds' Feet Farm, a provider of brain injury services in North Carolina, USA. She has worked in disability services with adults and children in a wide variety of settings, with special emphasis on brain injury and autism. Erica has been a part of the Unmasking Brain Injury project since its inception, helping brain injury survivors communicate about their experiences on a global scale. Each winter, she supports her day program members in creating a unique entry into the National Gingerbread House Competition. Outside of work, Erica enjoys cooking, reading, and doing outdoor activities with her partner, Brent, and their sons, Lucian and Robin.

Eamonn Kennedy is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Utah in the TORCH lab. He is passionate about using innovative new methods to improve Veteran’s lives and long-term outcomes following military experiences. His specific research interests include investigations of behavioral health and chronic complex comorbidity following Traumatic Brain Injury. After completing his PhD in Physics at University College Dublin, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Notre Dame Harper Cancer Institute from 2014 to 2017. From 2017-2020, Eamonn served as a Senior Research Scientist at Brown University where he applied statistical learning to computational questions in metabolomics and molecular information systems. He is honored to have the opportunity to apply his knowledge of biomedical imaging and statistical learning to urgent questions in military health.

Hope Kent is an ESRC funded PhD student, studying on the Advanced Quantitative Methods pathway of SWDTP studentships at the University of Exeter. Prior to this, I worked as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner in the NHS.
My research looks at risk factors and protective factors for contact with the Criminal Justice System in young people. I am using large administrative datasets to examine offending trajectories, and outcomes in custody, for neurodiverse young people. I am interested in cumulative risk theory as applied to vulnerable children and adolescents to predict outcomes such as school incompletion or exclusion, and contact with the criminal justice system.

She currently works at the Ontario Brain Injury Association, where she serves as the project lead on the Return to Work project. Prior to this, she dedicated 8 years of her career to the United Health Network (UHN) Toronto Rehab ABI services, gaining valuable experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. During her tenure at UHN, she pursued various courses in behavioral management, and disability management. Margaret Kroese, MSSW, FACHE, CBIS currently serves as the Executive Vice President of Hope Network Neuro Rehabilitation. Hope Network is one of the largest community-based non-profit rehabilitation organizations in the state of Michigan. Margaret has served as the President of the Michigan Brain Injury Providers Council (MBIPC), on the Board of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan and continues to serve on the Executive Committee of the Coalition Protecting Auto No-Fault (CPAN). She has also served on multiple state workgroups focused on Medicaid funding for brain injury rehabilitation. She received her Master’s in the Science of Social Work from the University of Louisville in Kentucky and her undergraduate degree in Political Science from Calvin College in Michigan. She is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist. She has testified on various insurance reform proposals and been an invited speaker on the subject of auto insurance reform and public policy.

Biography

Dr. Ladowsky-Brooks is a registered psychologist with a practice in Clinical Neuropsychology. In 1987, she graduated with a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario, with an area of specialization in Clinical Neuropsychology. After completing internship positions at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care, West Park Hospital, and Mount Sinai Hospital, she was employed as a staff neuropsychologist at St. Michael’s Hospital and in the Head Injury and Neurology Program at the Worker's Safety and Insurance Board. She is currently working in full-time private practice, providing insurance and medical-legal assessments. Academic contributions to her field have included a past teaching position at York University and publications in the areas of neuroscience, neuropsychology, learning, and cognitive rehabilitation. She has current research interests in neuropsychological models of belief, neuropsychological correlates of emotional and psychological disorders, and neuropsychological test development.

Biography

Pierre Langevin completed his physiotherapy training at Université Laval, Quebec, Canada, in 1997 and gained his Canadian IFOMPT credentials in 2002. He holds a Master of Clinical Science from University of Western Ontario completed in 2010 and PhD from Université Laval on clinical intervention of the neck and vestibular system on concussion completed in 2022. Pierre is the co-owner of Physio Interactive and Clinique Cortex. As a professor in physiotherapy at Université Laval, he has taught in that program since 1998. He is sharing his professional time between clinical practice, teaching and engaging in clinical research on back and neck pain, and concussion. He is an instructor, examiner and the Credentials Chair for the Canadian Physiotherapy Association Orthopaedic Division. He has published several scientific peer-reviewed papers and has been presenter of scientific posters and podium presentation in national and international congress. He holds post graduate courses on clinical research and evidence-informed practice for neck pain and concussion. Finally, he has received the 2017 Excellence award, the 2020 interprofessional Quebec Council award and the Fellow title of honour of the Ordre de la physiothérapie du Québec.

Biography

Dr. Jan Lavrijsen (MD, PhD) is senior researcher in elderly care medicine, lecturer, program leader and head ot the ’Knowledge Center for Patients with Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness, in particular the long-term care’, at the Department of Primary and Community Care of the Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen, The Netherlands. His expertise is on long-term care for patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDOC). He presented his mission in a TEDxtalk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrRTFUp7NLU
In 2011, he founded a research group dedicated to the severest outcomes of acquired brain injury. Since 2016, he leads a nationwide academic network of expertise (EENnacoma: https://www.eennacoma.nl/). In that network, the research group collaborates with several nursing homes and a specialized rehabilitation center for patients with PDOC. Until December 2022, he was member of the board of the Dutch Brain Injury Alliance. Since January 2023 he is member of the board of Verenso, the Dutch Association of Elderly Care Physicians. Additionally, he is (co)author of dozens of publications on PDOC or severe brain injury and as co-supervisor involved in several PhD projects.

Tuan Le

Biography

Dr. Le is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Texas Tyler School of Medicine (UTTSOM) with solid credentials in health science, including a Doctor of Medicine (1993), a Doctor of Public Health in Clinical Research (2008), and a Master of Public Health in Health Management and Policy (2004). He is also a Co-Director and a principal investigator of numerous funded projects. He participates in teaching Epidemiology and Biostatistics courses and mentoring MPH students and residents. Before joining UTTSOM, he was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Long School of Medicine, an Adjunct Professor at the UT Tyler School of Community and Rural Health, and a health research scientist at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research and Veteran Affairs Healthcare System. Dr. Le has more than 20 years of experience in multidisciplinary research topics, including but not limited to traumatic brain injury, prehospital intervention, the influence of policy on mortality and morbidities, burn and non-burn trauma clinical outcomes, and combat casualty care research. He authored and co-authored more than 75 research articles, including NEJM, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAM Surgery, Annal of Surgery, and other high-impact journals, and more than 100 unique abstracts presented at national and international scientific conferences.

Biography

Catherine Leclerc is a clinical neuropsychology Ph.D. student at the University of Montreal. Before joining her doctoral program, she obtained a bachelor's degree in cognitive neuroscience. Her research interests involve sleep after traumatic brain injuries, non-pharmacological interventions, actigraphy and electroencephalography.
