Biography

Wayne W. Allison is an Indigenous researcher and Ph.D. candidate at Western University. He holds a B.Sc. in Human Kinetics from the University of Guelph and an M.Sc. in Integrative Bioscience from Western. As an Indigenous scholar, Wayne is committed to fostering safer environments for athletes, integrating traditional values of community care and well-being into his scientific work.

Wayne’s research has focused on biomechanics and brain strain in sports-related concussions. He has leveraged head impact sensor data and modelling techniques to investigate concussion risks in female youth soccer and college football players. Drawing on his background in biomechanics, Wayne aims to bridge the gap between complex biomechanical models and practical applications in sports safety. By investigating the relationship between head injury metrics and concussion risks, Wayne hopes his work will contribute to more effective safety protocols, ultimately helping to protect athletes and reduce injuries.

In addition to his research, Wayne has contributed to equity and inclusion efforts as a student representative on the Faculty of Health Sciences EDIDA committee, and as co-chair of the Indigenous committee. His involvement reflects a broader commitment to supporting diverse perspectives within academia. Outside of his academic pursuits, Wayne lives in Chatham with his wife, two daughters, and their dog, and he’s a big fan of football. He believes life’s detours often lead to the most meaningful discoveries. This outlook enriches both his personal and professional journey, guiding him as he navigates the planned and unexpected paths in life and research.

Edward Anton

Speaker Image

Biography

Edward Anton M.D. is a dedicated physiatrist with specialized training in Brain Injury Medicine, completed during a fellowship at the prestigious Mayo Clinic. His journey into brain injury medicine was ignited by his exposure to the complexities of disorders of consciousness and the profound impact of tailored rehabilitation on patients with traumatic brain injuries. Dr. Anton’s expertise extends to advanced neurorehabilitative techniques, including the management of spasticity and post-concussive syndromes, honed during his residency at Casa Colina, a leading rehabilitation center.

Beyond the clinic, Edward has a deep-seated passion for addressing the evolving challenges in neurorehabilitation, particularly the intersection of the fentanyl crisis and anoxic brain injuries. Recently he has focused his research and advocacy on the neuroepidemiology of anoxic brain injury in the context of opioid overdoses, where he collaborates with interdisciplinary leaders to better depict the incidence and burden of this complex disease.

A former rugby player and team captain, Dr. Anton brings the same teamwork, resilience, and leadership he demonstrated on the field to his medical practice. His experiences in rugby, combined with his medical expertise, uniquely position him to support patients through their most challenging rehabilitative journeys.

Dr. Anton remains committed to advancing brain injury medicine through both clinical excellence and research, with a steadfast dedication to improving patient outcomes and addressing the broader public health implications of brain injuries in today’s complex healthcare landscape.

Biography

Nicholas is a certified speech and language therapist, senior lecturer and NIHR senior research fellow from City St Georges, University of London in the UK. He has an interest in the assessment and management of people with cognitive-communication problems following brain injury. His research has involved controlled trials including feasibility trials, that used mixed methods to explore complex behavioural treatments for people with brain injury (communication partner training, projects, peer befriending). He has interests in exploring fidelity measurement, dating and sexuality, measuring conversation, and the assessment of communication problems via telehealth. His current work involves the use of behavioural change theory and other intervention frameworks to co-design treatments for this clinical population. Nicholas’ aims to produce research that has direct benefit to improving the communication skills of people with brain injury and their families, and to the clinicians that are tasked with putting that research into clinical practice.

With a particular focus on advancing rehabilitation strategies for patients suffering from severe brain injuries, her research aims to improve recovery outcomes for individuals incurring TBI of all severities.

Dr. Pape’s work often utilizes cutting-edge neurorehabilitation techniques, including repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive brain stimulation method that she has studied extensively for its potential to enhance recovery in DoC patients. Her research seeks to understand how rTMS can stimulate neural plasticity and restore consciousness in individuals with prolonged disorders following a TBI.
In addition to leading various clinical trials, Dr. Pape collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, integrating neuroimaging, neurophysiology, and cognitive science to develop novel therap

Biography

Dr Elise Bogart is a certified practising speech pathologist and senior lecturer in communication and neurological rehabilitation at the University of Sydney, Australia. Elise’s career has included clinical and academic roles across public, private, inpatient and community settings. Elise’s research aims to improve assessment and treatment of cognitive, linguistic and social communication disorders after acquired brain injury. Elise’s PhD investigated the process of communication recovery after a traumatic brain injury and the factors that influence prognosis. An outcome of this project was the establishment of the TBIBank database, now an internationally shared repository of spoken discourse samples. Elise went on to develop the TBIBank Grand Rounds which offers a free online, multimedia educational resource about communication disorders after a traumatic brain injury to help build clinicians’ confidence with diagnosis and treatment. Elise’s current interests focus on further expansion of the TBIBank resources and the use of storytelling-based treatments to support communication recovery.
